Adult idiopathic scoliosis is scoliosis in an adult that began during adolescence as Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) and progresses into adulthood.
Research shows that a scoliosis curve less than 30° at maturity (no additional growth) is unlikely to progress significantly during adulthood. However, a curve greater than 30° is likely to progress 0.5° to 2° per year.
Visual signs of scoliosis can include:
Uneven shoulder height
Uneven shoulder blades
One leg appears longer than the other
Uneven waistlines
Rib on one side protruding in the front
Noticeable curve
Uneven hips
Adults with scoliosis can have symptoms due to disc & joint degeneration. Adult scoliosis clients tend to display postural imbalances that contribute to their pain and stiffness.
Symptoms can include:
Low back pain and stiffness
Neck pain
Shoulder pain
Hip pain
Numbness, cramping, and shooting pain in the legs
Fatigue
Adult DEGENERATIVE Scoliosis
Adult Degenerative Scoliosis begins in the adult client due to degeneration of the discs and arthritis of the facet joints. It is most commonly seen in the lumbar spine (lower back) and is often accompanied by a loss of the lumbar lordosis curve.
Symptoms can include:
Low back pain
Hip pain
Shoulder pain
Numbness
Shooting pain down the leg
SCHROTH METHOD FOR ADULT SCOLIOSIS
The Schroth Method can reduce the pain, numbness, and stiffness experienced with adult scoliosis. At ScoliosisPTJax we will design a unique posture-specific exercise program to strengthen and lengthen your spine. We work with adults in their late teens through seniors.
